Now at Ikea…Virtual Furniture “Ikea Furniture Store”

Proving that good marketing truly does know no bounds, Scandinavian furniture giant Ikea has found a way to sell their oddly-named, build-it-yourself furniture in the virtual world. Yes, design icons like the Leksvik coffee table and Ektorp sofa will now be featured in “The Sims,” the game series that allows players to simulate all the actions (and we do mean ALL of them) of real life with virtual people in a game setting. Instead of actually going outside and…you know…living life and stuff…

Of course, this target audience of Gen Y-ers and slacker types is part of the genius of Ikea’s deal with EA Games. Many Sims players probably already furnish their own homes with affordable Ikea designs – or they will once they move out of Mom and Dad’s basement. And while Ikea is not known for being prohibitively expensive in the real world, they’re seriously slashing prices in the virtual one, offering players an entire “Starter Pack” filled with all the sleek Scandinavian designs necessary to create a stylin’ virtual abode for a mere $20! No word yet if any Sims characters have had trouble assembling some of the more Ikea complicated creations. Maybe those wooden pegs fit in those little holes better in virtual reality…
